History of Kangra Tea

Kangra tea has a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. The region's unique climate and geography, characterized by its elevation and monsoon patterns, provide ideal conditions for tea cultivation.

Origins

  • Introduction of Tea: While tea was consumed in India for centuries, it wasn't until the British colonial period that tea cultivation began in Kangra. The first successful tea plantation was established in 1849 by a British tea planter, and the region quickly became known for its high-quality tea.
  • Indigenous Practices: Local farmers initially adopted tea cultivation, blending traditional agricultural methods with new techniques introduced by British planters.

Growth and Recognition

  • Quality and Varietals: Kangra tea is known for its distinct flavor, often described as aromatic and delicate. The region produces various types, including black, green, and oolong teas, which gained popularity in both domestic and international markets.

  • Challenges: The 1905 earthquake significantly affected tea plantations, but many eventually recovered. Despite challenges such as competition from other tea-producing regions, Kangra tea has maintained its reputation.

Modern Era

  • Sustainable Practices: In recent years, there has been a push towards organic and sustainable farming practices, enhancing the tea's appeal to health-conscious consumers.

  • Cultural Significance: Kangra tea has become a symbol of local heritage, celebrated in festivals and gaining recognition as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, which helps protect its uniqueness and authenticity.

Today, Kangra tea continues to thrive, blending tradition with modern agricultural practices, and remains an integral part of the region’s economy and culture.

 

IHBT Report:

Kangra tea has received strong support from the Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) at Palampur, a unit of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) of the Government of India. In their findings, it has been found that Kangra Tea is Very Good for health and its totally different blend and unique flavor as compared to Darjeeling or Assam Tea.
